The reinvention of Christina Aguilera

She rode the teen pop boom to stardom, then stripped down to a pouty, raunchier image that earned her the handle "Xtina." But that was merely the opening act for this newly hitched, multiplatinum-selling bottle-blonde.

When Christina Aguilera walks into the bar of Manhattan's artsy SoHo Grand Hotel, she may as well have just stepped off a 1940s Hollywood backlot. Her loose, platinum blond waves cascade past her shoulders, and she is dressed in a thin, red cardigan and capri-length blue jeans, with an ivory sweater cinched with a brown belt around her tiny waist. Her lips are painted a shocking crimson, her skin a shade of orange Mother Nature never intended. This 21st-century Sweater Girl is Christina Aguilera, Version 3.0, who bears little resemblance to her previous incarnation as the sweaty sexpot in butt-baring chaps of her "Dirrty" video, or to the bubble-gum teeny-bopper of her first hit, "Genie in a Bottle." She is kinder, gentler and, if not sexually demure, at least more cheekily naughty. As the 25-year-old singer prepares to release her third studio album, "Back to Basics," this new Christina is an ecstatically happy married lady, ready to put her tumultuous past behind her.
"I'm emotionally in a lighter space," she says, leaning her elbows on her knees as she explains how her husband, Jordan Bratman, 29, has transformed her life. The pair wed in an intimate California ceremony last November after dating for nearly four years. "Before I met Jordy, I had a lot of hurt inside of me. I had a lot of defenses up. He broke down a lot of those walls. From Day One, once we met in Atlanta and then he'd moved out to L.A., we were inseparable. I just didn't want to do anything if he wasn't around."
The previous evening, I met Aguilera at a listening party for "Back to Basics" in an uptown Manhattan recording studio, where she animatedly described the inspiration behind each song while Bratman sat patiently alongside, occasionally putting his hand on the small of her back or leaning in to whisper in her ear. She is chatty and articulate, having shaken her affected b-girl accent along with her need to come off as a sullen wild child. "Just remember, this is an unmastered version," she repeatedly warned the assembled executives from her label, RCA, and assorted media types. "As you listen, imagine it sounding ... perfect."
"I am a perfectionist by nature," she tells me over cappuccinos the following evening. "I'm an organizational freak. My label maker is my best friend. It's to the point where sometimes it annoys even me."
The pop star has come a long way since she got her start in the early '90s as a member of the Mickey Mouse Club alongside Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. With 25 million albums sold and three Grammys under her belt, not only has she safely established herself as the best female singer of her generation, but also as a credible and visionary artist. She flaunts all of those abilities on the Aug. 15 release of "Back to Basics," a two-disc set that combines jazz, blues and soul with modern R&B hip-hop. The album's first single, "Ain't No Other Man," which Aguilera debuted in a Busby Berkeley-esque performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards, entered the charts in the top 20 and had closed in on the top five by press time. Whereas she considers her previous full-length, 2002's "Stripped," her "coming-of-age, coming out of my cage" disc, this new collection allowed her to indulge her long-held passion for singers such as Etta James and Billie Holiday.
"Christina was always singing blues, going back to her early recordings," says Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair, who signed Aguilera to RCA in 1998 and executive produced every album. "She performed with B.B. King on national TV when she was 17, and with artists like Dr. John. She was doing ambitious musical things, but no one paid attention because they were too busy comparing her to Britney."
Of course, nowadays, Aguilera and Spears have diametrically opposing relationships with the press. For her part, Aguilera says she makes a point of avoiding paparazzi and behavior that might get her gossip-page mentions. Occasionally, she "might go out for a drink or to a club," but mostly she keeps to herself. During her leisure time, she and Bratman like to vacation in Japan ("the fashion is outrageous, and the culture is amazing") or take little trips to Carmel, Calif. "You've got the woods and the beach in one place, and we just like to be cozy. Me and my hubby have what we call our 'cozy Sundays,' " she says. "Sometimes you gotta twist my arm to get me to go to the movies."
Although Aguilera keeps her personal life fairly low profile, she isn't shy about discussing deeply personal topics. Chief among those: When she was about 8, growing up in a suburb of Pittsburgh, her mother, Shelly, divorced her Army sergeant father, Fausto, following years of alleged abuse that Aguilera has documented in songs such as "I'm OK" and the new album's "Oh Mother." (Sample lyric: "It was the day he turned on the kids that she knew she had to leave him.") "It's therapeutic for me to talk about it," she says. "It gives me a reason to understand why I went through what I did and why I was given this gift to share my voice and words with the world. There's so much more I want to do. It happens to so many people. My father was a sergeant in the Army, so we lived on Army bases when I was little, and it was happening a lot. The MPs would come, but a lot of them were doing the same things [to their wives and kids]. I was surrounded with domestic violence, not only in my home but my friends."
After the divorce, Shelly, Christina and little sister Rachel moved in with Shelly's mother, whom Christina says was the first to notice that "singing might be more than just something I liked to do." As painful as those early years were, the singer acknowledges that the experience inspired her to become the artist she is today. "My grandma and I used to go into the city and search through vinyl at old record stores," Aguilera says. "I was starting to get a reputation around town for singing at small events as 'the little girl with the big voice,' and my grandma would get a kick out of having this 8-year-old girl belt out blues and soul songs that were far beyond her years. I called it my 'fun music.' When I started making this record, I reverted back to, 'What makes me wanna sing? What makes me wanna dance?' And it's this old sound of blues, soul and jazz. You can't help but feel it right here."
Once she finished touring in support of "Stripped," Aguilera began digging through scads of vintage tracks to school herself on the legendary artists who would inspire "Back to Basics." "I studied Ella [Fitzgerald] and Billie and Otis [Redding] and Etta, Millie Jackson, Eartha Kitt," she says, her bright blue eyes dancing with excitement as she rattles off the names like they're dear friends.
Following her research, Aguilera studiously put together two mix CDs full of more than 30 tracks from those artists, and she wrote a long memo with bullet points for every track. "It started out, 'Dear Producer,' and I sent it out to all the producers I thought might get where I was trying to go," she says. "I wanted someone who could experiment, chop up bits and pieces and come up with different sounds." Ultimately, she divided the majority of the work between two producers. For Disc One, which includes reinterpretations of old-school sounds, she recruited DJ Premier, a beatmaker best known for his work with the '90s rap group Gang Starr. "He's so good at taking obscure bits and pieces, or even a well-known piece, and cutting them up in a way that you wouldn't even recognize where they're from. There's an art to that, and he's got it down."
And for the second disc, she re-teamed with Linda Perry, who produced and wrote "Beautiful" and has worked on hit records with Pink and Gwen Stefani. For the Perry-produced disc, Aguilera achieved an authentically creaky and organic vintage sound by insisting on live instruments and elaborate arrangements for strings, horns and even a Gregorian choir. (There's only one sample.) Meanwhile, Aguilera immersed herself in the whole look and feel of '40s and '50s pinup culture, remodeling her look to fit her new sound. "It was almost like method singing. I wouldn't go to the studio without wearing my red lipstick."
But make no mistake: Christina Version 3.0 does not rely solely on cosmetics to flaunt her sex appeal. She is as coquettish as ever, singing in "Nasty, Naughty Boy" -- well -- you'll just have to listen for yourself. And, as ever, she's got a remarkably well-considered and articulate explanation for this new incarnation's sexual dynamics. "On this record, the sexuality has taken on more of a playful vibe with the burlesque thing," Aguilera says. "Burlesque isn't about showing much skin, but being provocative in a sensual way. It's cutesy, with a little raunchiness thrown in -- but with a smile."
And her next sentence begins the way so many others of hers seem to: "... And that's another thing I love about Jordy," Aguilera says, noting that her husband, a nondescript music marketing exec from New York, isn't threatened by her sexually brazen performances. Besides, she certainly devotes a fair share of "Back to Basics" to rhapsodizing about how Bratman is truly the only man who matters in her life.
On "The Right Man," though, she notes that her wedding day brought an unanticipated moment of sadness when she realized how strange it was not to have a father to walk her down the aisle. "I figured I'd just walk myself down the aisle, but I never realized how nervous you get when the big day comes," she says. "When it came time to walk down the aisle, I was shaking, and I realized how amazing it would've felt to have a man holding my arm to give me away to this next man in my life. That was the first time I felt or maybe ever needed a father figure. But it made me who I am. And, at the end of 'The Right Man,' I say, 'One day, my little girl will reach out her hand, she'll know I found the right man.' "
